The Crossing - What do you think?

As you know, using two full days to watch a movie is not something that I take lightly. However, given our timing at the end of the nine-weeks and as we move into exams this week, I believe that The Crossing was a perfect fit.

The film provides an interesting portrayal of Washington's crossing of the Delaware River and the Battle of Trenton.

For this blogging session, I would like you to give your reaction to the movie.  Do you think that it was a realistic film?  Did it do an adequate job of teaching history? Or was it mostly just entertainment? Did you enjoy the film? Do you think that films like this are appropriate for an American history class?

I also want to know what you learned about the crossing of the Delaware and the Battle of Trenton. Do you feel like you understand the events better having seen the film? Why was this such an important event? What did the outcome of the battle mean to Washington's beleaguered army?

Please be thoughtful in your response. I really want to know what you think. I encourage you to read the comments of others, then add thoughts and ideas of your own.

This blogging session will remain open throughout this week. After commenting, come back later and see what has been added since you were here.

I think this movie could be realistic in many ways. At that time being, yes something like what is potrayed on the movie could happen. The hessians could surrender. I like visual learning. So this movie was a perfect fit. The movie had events that are real vital to American History. When they surrendered because their men were being taken down by the numbers would be a example of how the events are vital. None of Washington's men were killed in this battle, he seemed to be bewildered by that. Yes, I wouldve understood The Crossing of Delaware and the battle of Trenton from the text, but seeing it all play out in a movie made learning it more thrilling and exciting. This event was important because it was the first battle the continental army won, after many defeats. I really did enjoy this movie, it made class a bit more interesting in learning.

I believe the movie was realistic and a good portrayal of the crossing. It helped me understand why the battle of Trenton was so important by seeing the desperation in Washington at the beginning of the film and then the relief after the battle. I think films like this are very important in history classes and give you a good visual understanding of the topics. This film was very well done in my opinion and was not just for entertainment but also good for learning purposes.

In my opinion, the film was very realistic and this film did do an adequate job of teaching. I learned a lot. It was also very entertaining that it kept me tuned in to watch it. Watching films seems to make it easier for me to understand, because it is a lot more interesting than just reading information. I think films are very appropriate for an American history class, because watching films is more fun than just reading the text and trying to memorize it. I understand the events way better, because now I am able to visualize how they happened. Washington had been beat by a British army advancing on to New York. Then, he failed to stop the British offensive, and the Americans were forced to retreat into Pennsylvania. So all Washington could to do was hold together his army, so he decided to raid across the Delaware River and their he captured nine hundred Hessians and convinced the American troops to keep fighting.

I think that this movie is realistic because it shows you how a war looks like to give you a better understanding. Like what Lydia said it gives me a better picture of what the text was trying to tell me. I learn better when I see things. One thing I learned was with the help of God Washington was able to get the Hessians the surrender and that was their first win that they had. Also that none of Washington's men were wounded when against the Hessians. I think that movies that are base on what we learn is very helpful in my education as well as others.

I think this movies is by far the most realistic portrayal of the importance of the battle of Trenton. The movie showed how important this battle meant to Washington and it gave me a better understanding then the text did. I think this movie did a good job at giving historical information such as the hardship Washington faced, but it was not a historical as previous movies such as the John Adams movie. Nonetheless I belive that we should view a movie or documentary before a big test because I learn more from a movie then reading a textbook. I learned about the generals who were involved in this battle and how sucessful Washington was.

I really enjoyed watching this movieduring class. It made the Battle of Trenton easier to learn being able to see this. I did not understand how much preperation and thinking went to into this before the crossing. After the battle when Washington lost no men, hurt or wounded, it brought a lot of momentum on the patriots side, being the first battle they won.

I think that this movie was very realistic. It gave a more in depth understanding of the Battle of Trenton and also helped me to understand the mood of the battle. The movie gave me an easier way to memorize the sequence of the battle and also a good visual of the fight. I think that this movie did a very good job at portraying history accurately and also making it interesting.

My reaction would be amazed or astonished. I kind of thought it was in the middle but leaning towards realism. Well, the movie taught me a handful of information, like how people were detained because of the case, someone might give the British there location. I really enjoyed this movie, we should have more of these types of movies. With more Gore! Haha, just kidding. - no not really - And yes these movies are appropriate to teach in an American History class. I learned that it took a couple of days to set up the operation and how they were able to transport each individual to the other side. It was such an important event because it was the first battle the Continental Army and George Washington has won after a chain of defeats. It brought there morals up, and maybe some had re-enlisted for another tour.

I liked the movie, but in my opinion, I didn't think it was very realistic. The reason I say this is because the leader said at the end of the battle that there were no casualties or wounded. Even with a surprise attack, I severely doubt that his army would have suffered no injuries. In the fightscene, it showed the Hessians firing at the Americans with rifles. I would bet my life on it that if 1200 Hessians were using rifles, AT LEAST 1 soldier in the other army would have been shot.

I agree with Stephen P. i liked the movie a lot, everything in the movie was enjoyable but i think that in that whole little battle there should be at the very least a couple wounded. Other than that this was a great movie and helped me understand the battle of Trenton a little more.

the movie was a great sum up of the battle of trenton. it was very realistic in the way it was made and it accounted for the struggles and personal emotions going through the continental army right before they fought the Hessians visual learning is a bit easier than textbook learning for me. I would have understood the crossing in the textbook but it would not have been as easy to understand it from the text this was the first victory and this is what made this battle important
